It’s the Liberty Pub Crawl – July 2006
Well as NYer’s go Independence day is just as big a celebration is it is in the back farms of Oklahoma. And what better ways to celebrate our freedom than with explosives and alcohol. On July 22nd, however, we’ll only be serving the beer so get your fireworks fix on the 1st weekend of July. July 22nd happens also to be the Polish Liberation Day so all you polls come out and you might find you’re self chin deep in an American brew.
This month was a struggle to determine what’s the appropriate spot for the crawl. We have several core crew members headed to the PS1 parties on Saturdays throughout the summer so for those that can skip a day at that fine event, come along for this crawl through Murray Hill, Kips Bay and down into Grammercy. You’ll notice more bars on the route than usual and less walking between them (which we hope means more rounds!). However, we know we’ve added a few spots on the list that could be questionable on a Saturday afternoon so there’s more options this time to move on to the next spot!
This month we start at the top of the Shelbourne Hotel @ Rare Bar and Grill. This isn’t your typical bar crawl spot but its a good view of the city below and will give you a perspective of what we NYers concur on a daily basis. The last bar on this list is Plug Uglies which is decorated with the shoulder patches of police officers and firefighters from all over New York, the U.S. and the world. Ironically it happens to be named after an old Irish gang. Mistakenly named from Herbert Asbury‘s book Gangs of New York (1927) the gang was originally from Baltimore – (Plug Uglies Gang). The point is… public service officers frequent the joint so please pay your tributes in drinks and praises and not in bail money because you and your drunk ass friends can control yourself.
Please feel free to provide comments and feedback on the bars (before and after the crawl) and of course let us see your American pride out on the 22nd!
