The Recession PubCrawl – Flatiron NYC – August 9th, 2008
We’ve all heard that term floated around a little too frequently these days. Even if you’re in dire straights there’s still opportunity to drink your sorrows away. So after a few summer months away we’re bring back a crawl through mid-Manhattan in the Flatiron District.
Named around 1985 after the Flatiron building on 23rd and 5th/Broadway, the area prior was known as the “Toy” district for all the manufactures located in the area or “Photo” district for all the photographer studios. We’ll be starting in Madison Square Park at Shake Shack’s beer and wine counter, taking in the cooler weather we’ve been having and a view of the Flatiron. The hardcores will be there near noon for pre-crawl lunch and brews but the rest that want to hit the route all the way through should be there at 2 pm.
After a tan, we’ll head across the street to Limerick House. Known primarily for after work happy hour libations, great staff, food and cheapish beers, Limerick is a true no-frills Irish pub. We’ll be heading west to Markt, for Belgian beers and frites (see if you can get order something other than Stella or Hoegaarden). Slate is south on 6th and on 21st for some billiards and brews and then Taj Lounge will open up for us to take over. Flatiron lounge is the only cocktail bar on the crawl to savor the prohibition era digs and specialty drinks (at non-recession prices however).
No Idea is a great spot for brews and good people… so you all should fit right in. This Saturday anyone named Lori on the crawl will be drinking for free at No Idea. Old Town Bar is one of the oldest bars in the neighborhood, started pouring in 1892. During prohibition, it was converted to a speakeasy and to this day it still had that old charm with the original mahogany and marble bar. Pete’s Tavern is closer to the Gramercey side of the hood and claiming an even older heritage, starting up in 1864 – which they claim they are “the longest continuously operating bar and restaurant in New York City” (disguised as a flower shop during prohibition). Our last bar on the crawl is an unassuming Irish Pub, Paddy Maguire’s Ale House, however, they are very conducive to drinking and celebrating a great night out. Get yourself a real Imperial 20 oz. pint of Guinness and celebrate the beginning of Sunday!
