Conservative convention will have liberal drinking rights
Reported in the Star Tribune out of Minneapolis, MN the city council will approve extending the hours of operation for bars during the Republican National Convention of 2008 to 4 am. The bill allows the city to extend its usual 2 a.m. bar closing and allows packaged liquor to be sold on Sundays during an 11-day period around the convention. The council wants the power to limit where the late hours would be allowed and on what days.
The purpose of this is the perception that late drinking hours equate to being a great city. Sorry guys. St. Paul and Minneapolis will never be as great a city as New York City, Las Vegas or Miami and extending drinking hours by 2 hours for 11 days will not create the illlusion of such, however, I’m all for the bars that get the opportunity to extend their business hours and make a little extra cash off those traveling to the RNC.
Not everyone is happy about the ruling as St. Paul DFL Council Member Dave Thune was concerned about “puking Republican lobbyists” over that time period. True, those Reps can’t hold their liquor past 2 am, have you seen what happens on the streets of Murry Hill after 2?
