Crooklyn Crawl
I never realized how much brooklynites loved their board games. At least 5 of the bars we went to had board games to share with the patrons and we ended up making up our own at the Zombie hut – a drinking version of Dirty Minds.
The first spot was not a pub crawl spot but more of a place you’d hanging out for Sunday brunch – Apt 138. We left after some ribs and started the session at Vegas – a spot not on the crawl but well worth the $3 BPRs. Vegas was wall to wall decor for Halloween and by far the most festive of all the spots we hit all night. I’d definitely hang here for either some pool or kick it on the velvet couches with a bucket of beers.
Ceol was a good spot for some Irish food and a few Guinness. A very supportive bar for our troops with a large selection of taps and bottle beers – they even had Brahma which we tossed a few back. Not much at this spot but a few random drunks and families in the back room. They do have traditional Irish music on Wed. and Sundays which I would love to check out next time around.
Next up was Angry Wade’s a neighborhood bar with the majority of the locals watching college football or conversating over their pints of Brooklyn lager. We met up with the Brits and had a few pints over a whipping Kris and I served at the dart board. It wasn’t cold enough to light up the fireplace and we didn’t stick around long enough to take advantage of the 3rd/4th round bartender buy backs but next time.
The 2nd strike on this crawl schedule came with the closing of Village 247 – we walked up to a boarded up building. No matter, that translates to extra time at the Zombie Hut. They were just opening up, all be it half hour late, and we had our pick of the spot. I guess it was too cold for this spot to open up the back patio area but would be a nice touch in the summer time. This place is known for their tasty tiki hut style cocktails and we devoured one of their flaming bowled drinks of punch (was there alcohol in there, I couldn’t tell) while conjuring up our own drinking games to kick start the buzz of the evening.
One of the other useless spots on this crawl was The Bar a corner spot with no character and a bartender reading the paper behind the bar. We walked in and no music was playing and we were the only ones in the bar. When we vacated after a round, the music shut off and the place was empty but the sleeping bartender behind his NY Post. Won’t come back.
We pickedGowanus Yacht Club because, one it was on the route and two it’s the only spot we’ve ever had on our pub crawls where it’s completely outside. We ended up having our first refueling of the crawl… a hot dog eat off – no contest, just stuffing our face with freshly grilled hot dogs and sausages. $2 PBRs and $10 pitchers, if it wasn’t for the cold we would have extended the stay at this location…
Last stop on the official crawl was Brooklyn Social Club what was once the neighborhood Italian social club where the local ganstas hung out. Now it’s still a great hang out for the hipster crowds and locals – dimly lit, great cocktails, back room pool and a good vibe from the crowd. Great place to end up for the crawl or start the evening off right – you all have to check it out…
The rest of the evening we split our ways… Some back to Manhattan and some of the fellas attempting to work on that lonely girl at the end of the bar batting her eyes all all who pass by… Good luck fellas.
