SOHO/Lil’ Italy Crawl – Nov. 2007
It’s been a long summer without, but I’m sure all you GPC’ers have managed to find exciting things to pass the time till we started up our monthly crawls again. We’ve put together a mix of local joints, historical haunts, beer hauses, high end cocktail bars, celebrity hangouts, beer gardens, burger joints that server beer and just good all around spots in the nabe.
We’ll be starting early for lunch at the The Ear Inn (Officially the Crawl starts at 2 pm, however, feel free to get here earlier to start, or cheat with some food).
Established in 1817, the Ear Inn is a designated landmark in New York, and was originally right on the riverbank in the early decades of the 19th century (before Manhattan was filled out by trash and subway tunnel dirt). One condemned as unfit for use back in 1906, the Ear is not only haunted by the ghost of Mickey, a sailor killed just outside long ago, but up to 20 spirits chilling in the place upstairs. One apt owned by Martin Sheridan, the Ear Inn proprietor, has been vacant for 4 years since the last tenant moved out (reportedly he and his family were shaken awake by the phantoms repeatedly). Last bit of history, the Thomas Cloake’s Fidelio beer is still advertised on the menu as a homage to the former brewery that once occupied the space making that brew.
